This Wyoming Great Room Is All About Reclaimed Pieces

Inspired by its environmentally conscious owners, this home’s new gathering space is littered with repurposed gems.

Nestled in the foothills of Casper, Wyoming, this home pays homage to the majesty and mystery of its landscape. The environmentally conscious owners wanted the remodel of their home to incorporate repurposed pieces and reclaimed materials, as well as honor each of the couple’s design aesthetics: traditional and contemporary.

Just one space of the 5,000-square-foot addition, the home’s great room fits the bill. The space blends both styles into its transitional architecture and is equal parts big-picture and small details.

The gabled roof, clerestory windows, and walls of glass put a spotlight on the breathtaking surrounding views. When you refocus your eyes on elements in the foreground, you start to uncover treasures at every turn.

The wooden structural beams and rough-sawn flooring complement the smooth, white walls and the windows’ black interior finish. The chandeliers are custom-crafted from reclaimed barbed wiring, and at night their floating bulbs cast an intricate pattern of light into the space. The coffee tables are designed from repurposed gears, creating a lovely rustic contrast to the contemporary concrete fireplace—which hovers above the floor and serves as the understated focal point of the room. The built-in benches on either side are repurposed railroad boxcar flooring, and the holes are plugged with shotgun shells—adding a little Western flair to the mix.

While it boasts incredible mountain views and a few heavy pieces that might, at first glance, steal the show, it is this great room’s attention to detail that makes it a first-class gathering spot full of one-of-a-kind conversation-starters.
