It should be both a comfortable retreat at the end of a long day, and a beautiful centerpiece that you’ll enjoy seeing every morning when you wake and every night when you retire.

1. Play with textures
When designing the bedroom, select the bedding first, and then plan the other elements around it. It’s much easier to match paint color to a fabric than the other way around. Play with different patterns and textures to create dimension. A plaid duvet may pair well with matelassé accent pillows and geometric Euro shams tucked behind. Add a fringed decorative pillow or leather bolster for more textures.
2. Add cozy layers
When the view outside your bedroom window is a range of snow-covered mountains, layering may be a necessary part of your humble abode. Bed scarves, coverlets, and fur throws are a stylish way to sneak in an extra layer of warmth without compromising the aesthetic of the room.
3. Choose quality sheets
You spend about a third of your life sleeping (yes, one-third!), so choosing a quality set of sheets is not only an essential component of a beautiful bed but could also be beneficial to your health! Rather than focusing on thread count, pay attention to the quality of the cotton—like Egyptian cotton, as its long staple fibers make durable and soft yarns, resulting in lustrous, high-quality sheets. Sateens work well for cold climates, as its weave best retains heat, meaning a better night’s sleep after a long day out on the slopes.
There is no right or wrong way to curate a bed—it really is a matter of what works best for the sleeper, the person who will ultimately spend one-third of their life in it.
