How to Get the Lake House Look

Gordon Gregory

Just in time for the lazy days of summer, here are our top five ways to create that laid-back lake house vibe in your own home—even if there’s not a drop of water in sight.

1. Start with simple white-slipcovered sofas and chairs for a casual cottage vibe. Lee Industries offers many great choices, like this inviting sofa.

2. Keep your color palette calm and light—think seashell whites, sandy taupes and driftwood grays.

3. Paint something. Turn your blond wood floors blue (try Benjamin Moore’s Deep Ocean), oak wall paneling white, or brown cabinets a muted green (like Sherwin Williams’ Dill).

4. Add texture. Whether it’s grasscloth wallpaper (Phillip Jeffries’ Mosaic Hemp collection offers lovely neutrals), a durable sisal rug, or natural linen drapes, richly textured finishes offer plenty of warmth and interest within a subtle color palette.

5. Rough things up a bit. A real lake house is exposed to harsh natural elements, making weathered finishes inevitable. Incorporating some distressed elements will add authenticity to your home’s style. Look for recycled wood wall paneling and flooring, weathered wood beams or antique or vintage furnishings with a timeworn patina.
