Chasing Rainbows in Crested Butte
Late summer and early fall are a perfect time to visit one of the Rocky Mountains’ prettiest towns
The first time I visited Crested Butte was in late September, and I spent a good portion of one afternoon chasing rainbows around town. When I mentioned my rainbow hunt at the Guild Cafe, I was informed by the locals that fall is rainbow season in Crested Butte.
“We get at least one rainbow every afternoon,” said the women standing behind the counter.
I’m not as crazy as the “double rainbow guy,” but rainbows do make me insanely happy, despite the fact that I can’t seem to capture their full glory on camera, even my Canon. And like many Coloradans, Crested Butte makes me happy.
Crested Butte, is without a doubt, one of the Rocky Mountains’ prettiest villages, and with more than 60 restaurants between the town and ski resort, it’s also a foodie town. In addition to the food and scenery, it’s quintessentially Colorado.
A great reason to visit Crested Butte in August is that the nights are starting to get cooler and it’s a true escape from the smog of the city. Each Sunday in August, visitors can purchase treats at the Downtown Crested Butte Farmers Market. Every Wednesday night, the Town of Mount Crested Butte, at the ski resort, hosts live music.
Adventure-lovers can take part in Outerbike, a mountain bike extravaganza from August 17-19, 2018. Be sure to visit the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum during your visit, as they have an excellent exhibit on the vibrant history of mountain biking in the area.
Late summer is festival season in Crested Butte. The town comes alive with the sound of music, like CB Unplugged on September 1. This is a free music series sponsored by the Town of Mount Crested Butte and features nationally touring artists in an intimate setting.
Chili + Beer is scheduled for September 8 and takes places at the base of Mt. Crested Butte. The tasting event features regional and local chefs who pit their chili-making skills against one another. Of course, craft beer and live music play a big part in this Crested Butte party.
To get the real flavor of authentic Crested Butte, visit during Vinotok Fall Harvest Festival. This Crested Butte tradition occurs on September 23 and is a storytelling and fall harvest festival with roots in the autumnal equinox, which is the Pagan rite of Thanksgiving.

Whether you come for the festivals, rainbows, outdoor adventure or all three, Crested Butte makes the perfect getaway. With less crowds, great eats and friendly people, a trip here will have you singing this town’s praises.
