A Taste of Telluride: Where to Eat

After skiing or yoga, you're going to get hungry

No one visits Telluride to simply sit still. How could you? Whether it’s skiing, hiking, biking, fishing or yoga, there are a vast number of ways to stay busy in this town, and I guarantee all of these activities will make you hungry.

After a long morning of yoga or swishing down the slopes, locals and tourists flock to Baked in Telluride for two very good reasons: pizza and pastries.

Locally owned for 35 years, this place makes fresh food that tastes oh-so-good after exerting your energy on the mat or on the slope. For lunch, I recommended a fully loaded pizza followed by a donut. Don’t worry, you’ll work off those calories in the afternoon.

I’ve had many delicious dinners in Telluride, but the standout was my Colorado Wagyu burger at Palmyra, the restaurant inside The Peaks Resort & Spa in Mountain Village. Served up with white cheddar, pork belly, jam, red onion, arugula and a fried quail egg, it’s one of the best burgers I’ve ever put in my mouth.

Allred’s Restaurant is consistently rated the number one restaurant in Telluride on TripAdvisor.com, and it definitely has a million-dollar view. It is located on the mountain crest between town and Mountain Village and is accessible via Telluride’s free gondola. Ask about specials and, if you’re with a group, order the truffle fries. These $13 fries are probably the most popular apres-ski item on the menu and will feed you and a few friends.

Looking for a more casual dining experience? Try Smuggler’s Brew Pub in downtown Telluride. There will likely be a wait, so grab one of their excellent microbrews and peruse their Colorado-crafted menu while you loiter. I recommend the Chicken Royale with house-cured bacon.

For an after dinner treat in Mountain Village, I recommend The Village Table. We discovered this place one evening on our way back to our beautiful room at The Peaks Resort & Spa. Inside we discovered a guitarist playing Spanish guitar in a lovely environment. We ordered coffees and a mousse. It was a fantastic, impromptu find.
