A Stunning Before-and-After in Snowmass
This traditional mountain home was desperate for a contemporary upgrade
This beautiful 5,500 square-foot Snowmass Divide home was originally designed and built in 1990, in the style of Greene and Greene Architects.
For the remodel, the client wanted a contemporary look—but understood the need to work with the existing architecture, which included lots of exposed woodwork and stone. Large round corner beads, wood wainscoting and heavy drywall texture all screamed 1990’s traditional mountain style.
The final transformation is a fresh and airy, mountain modern beauty that hardly resembles its predecessor. View all of the before-and-after photos below.
View 1: Exterior
Anne Grice Interiors worked with Bill Pollock and Tim Andrulitus of Zone 4 Architects to select the new exterior color palette. Eliminating the dated green color and opting for a color the client loved—she referred to the dark color of the tobacco barns from her home state in Tennessee—gave the home a fresh, strong presence that works well with the existing rough granite stone walls.

View 2: Entry
One of the biggest transformations was the entry. Replacing the dated wood turned railing with a simple stainless steel design gave the space a whole new look. A walnut and steel console table was designed by Grice to accent the Tufenkian rug in blues and grays, and the Bernhardt bench in a creamy leather. The large pendant, also designed by Grice, was made by local glass blower Robert Burch, and wired by local blacksmith Franz Frolicher. Horse photography by Tori Gagne and Fall Aspens painting by local Tammie Lane.

The knotty pine floors were replaced with European white oak flooring throughout. The console, designed by Grice, was the perfect balance for the painting, displayed above, by David Warner of Basalt, Colorado.

View 4: Kitchen
Anne Grice Interiors expanded the kitchen and improved circulation by removing the peninsula, reducing the number of floor heights, and creating a new, very large island to serve as a gathering place. Countertops were kept at counter height for a more open feel. The kitchen backsplash was meticulously laid out on site by Grice. The hood was fabricated by Climbing Vine Forge in Paonia, Colorado, and the comfy bar stools were made by Patricia Edwards.

Carrying the dark brown color scheme into the interior gave the home a consistency that works well throughout. Sandstone countertops that have a patented sealer for kitchen use was a natural choice to complement the granite wall. The sink was also relocated to provide a view into the courtyard.

View 6: Great Room
Floor levels were adjusted for smoother transitions from the kitchen, living and hall areas. The existing Douglas fir ceilings were media blasted to lighten them up, and the beams, lintels and trusses were stained dark for contrast and to continue from the exterior. Textural furnishings in a neutral palette with denim accents prioritized comfort and durability. The texture of the Tufenkian rug and the softness of the A Rudin sectional and sofa set the tone for this cozy area.

View 7: Living Area
All of the existing windows needed to be replaced and it was a great opportunity to get more uninterrupted views. Windows and exterior doors were provided by Sierra Pacific Windows. Awkward soffits above windows and the fireplace were removed. Lighting—which was improved throughout—was especially critical in this area and was solved with recessed cans and up-lighting in the beams. Encaustic art pieces, by Theresa Stirling, of the owner’s pet horses were a great finishing touch to the living area.

View 8: Master Bedroom
This room shows the impact of removing the wood wainscot, rounded corner beads and heavy texture throughout—giving it a clean and modern look. The team was able to gain space in the bedroom by pushing the fireplace further into a wall that contained a lot of dead space. Grice designed a stone fireplace wall with niches for family photos as well as a bed wall using cerused wood flooring inset with leather panels. The motorized Mimi London lounge chairs are the perfect spot for an afternoon nap!

The reuleaux square-shaped stone tiles created a soft, textural impression. Alder cabinetry, Borghini marble countertops, and Una Malon sconces complete the look. The AXOR wall-mounted faucets and the Wawirka vessel sinks are a warm satin nickel that created just enough bling.

This beautiful freestanding tub became more functional with a marble surround for toiletries. The sleek AXOR tub filler and heated towel bar gave a spa feel to the space.

View 11: Dining Room / Study
This casual family had no use for the formal dining room, previously located awkwardly across the hall from the kitchen. It proved the perfect spot for the homeowner’s home office, with views to the courtyard. The smoked glass light fixtures were designed by Anne Grice, as a compliment to the entry fixture. Two butter soft reclining Natuzzi lounge chairs demand relaxation! The beautiful rug was cut to fit a non-conforming space, and the interesting shapes add a bit of fun.

A wall-to-wall faux leather headboard created a “split king” bed that can be used as twins or a king. The velvet-soft bedding is washable and durable—very practical for the grandkids. Linocut art by Sherrie York, aptly named “Watching and Waiting”, was the perfect choice for this bedroom.

A more contemporary look and family feel called for the large Thayer Coggin sectional in a beautiful blue gray chenille weave. The motorized drapery was replaced with new soft wool draperies for movie nights.
