A Modern Home With Classic Details
The home defies the expectation that ranch means rustic and that contemporary cannot be timeless
Built on the grounds of Colorado’s C Lazy U Ranch, this timeless abode features custom interior details and endless views. The home defies the expectation that ranch means rustic and that contemporary cannot be timeless.
Since 2008, C Lazy U Ranch was a favorite vacation destination for the Bolton family,” says Jennifer Jelinek, interior designer and owner of JJ Interiors.
Over the years, the Boltons developed a special bond with the ranch, the warm staff and other guests. In 2016, they purchased a lot, and their dream to build a legacy home for their family became reality.
“Their home is welcoming for all visitors—you truly feel like part of the family,” says Jennifer.
Nestled into the mountainside, the Bolton’s mountain home is oriented to maximize views of the breathtaking Continental Divide.
When the East Troublesome Fire erupted outside of Granby in the fall of 2020, the Boltons could only hope their dream getaway would be spared. The fire drew near, burning trees and grasses. Fortunately, the home was untouched by the fire itself and stands as beautiful as the day it was built.
“The Boltons wanted the home to be timeless, classic, elegant, sophisticated, yet casual,” Jennifer says. “With 3,500 square feet and a large program to fill, creating wide open spaces and unimpeded views was top on the list.”
With social gatherings a centerpiece of the home’s purpose, accommodations for 16 or more, or intimate gatherings for smaller groups are common. The home’s efficient and thoughtful plan by the architect and interior designer was brought to life by the builder and the spirit provided by the Bolton family.
With natural light flooding into nearly every room, the interiors are subtle and enhance the architecture.
“I love when I enter the home, and the beauty in the design, materials, furnishings and outdoor scenery take your breath away,” says homeowner Nancy Bolton. “It is so peaceful.”
Design elements throughout the home blur the line between the interiors and the surrounding landscape. A cluster of wire-framed LED fixtures float overhead in the entry and sliding glass doors flank metal fireplace housing artwork by Karmel Timmons. Underfoot, the fully customized rug pattern was created to balance the modern and classic aesthetic preferred by the homeowners.
A stunning Holly Hunt sofa, covered in luxurious blue velvet, rests in the center of the room providing a respite to put up your dogged feet after a day of horseback riding.
Lucite furniture and clear glass chandeliers in the dining room appear to hover over the landscape. The custom metal and wood table rests upon an additional custom creation: a scalloped edge hide rug reminiscent of delicate lace.
“The dining room is magnificent,” says Jennifer. “It perfectly blends the modern elements with the classical.”
Metal front cabinets house back-lit wine storage and glass front cabinetry. Modern peaked wood ceilings and structural I-beams contrast with these more refined elements.
Nearby, the back-lit onyx wall is a magical backdrop in the kitchen. A custom-designed Hammerton chandelier floats above the gloss white cantilevered island top.
Another custom element glows upon the stair ceiling. A suspended frame cradles pierced metal panels with backlighting to create a stunning feature in what could otherwise be a simple corridor.
An understated, Scandinavian-style built-in is fabricated from book-matched walnut in the master bedroom. Storage underneath holds extra blankets to cozy up with when the snow flurries fall.
Grain matched walnut cabinetry in the master bath float in front of chic iridescent glass tile.
The Boltons dream of a custom mountain home in Colorado came true. “I was overwhelmed with how the home came together exactly how I had always envisioned,” says Nancy.
“It was tremendously fun to work with a happy client, and to bringing a more classical perspective to mountain design,” Jennifer adds.
“This home represents the best in luxury living: easy, carefree, distinct, personal, special and joyful.”
