Cathers Home brings understated furnishings with international flair to the high country
Paul Cathers, owner of Cathers Home in Basalt, Colorado, operates his business with a no-frills mantra in mind: Less is more. The interior design studio and retail store offers a variety of simple, sophisticated pieces—ranging from clean-lined furniture to eclectic accessories to one-of-a-kind rugs—chosen to evoke tranquility in the home.

“Your home needs to be a sanctuary where you can have a sense of calm,” Cathers says. “We all have so much happening in our lives; everyone seems to be running 100 miles an hour all the time. I love creating spaces that are warm and inviting but still simplistic, where there’s not too much pattern or too much going on.”

A fashion model in his twenties, Cathers spent 12 years jet-setting around Europe, Asia and the U.S. for photo shoots and casting calls. Inspired by global design and handmade techniques, he began shipping containers of textiles and accessories back to the U.S. His passion for sharing his finds and the stories of artisans across the world evolved into what is now Cathers Home, a 3,500-square-foot showroom brimming with quality-made products sourced from all over the map: carpets from Nepal, photography from Colorado, dining tables from Canada.

“I have an immense appreciation for the work and the different regions that they come from,” Cathers says. “My biggest passion is my clients and customers feeling that excitement and getting just as excited about a piece as I am.”
The retail store is configured in a series of cozy vignettes. "I've heard from clients when they walk in that it doesn't feel like a furniture store," says Cathers. "It's very inviting, comfortable, and feels like home."
