Western Design Conference Debuts in its Newest Bozeman Location
From August 6-9, experience the Designer Show House, panels featuring industry experts and exquisite Western design.
Mountain Living sits down with Allison Merritt, Executive Director of the Western Design Conference (WDC), to learn more about the new Bozeman location and what attendees can expect from this year’s event.
What inspired the move from Jackson, Wyoming, to Bozeman after more than 30 years, and why is the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse the right home for the Western Design Conference?
Allison Merritt: After more than three decades in Jackson and Cody, we saw an opportunity to thoughtfully evolve the Western Design Conference while staying true to its roots. Bozeman offers a vibrant, design-forward community with strong accessibility and energy. The Brick Breeden Fieldhouse gives us the scale to grow, offering more exhibitors, more programming and a more immersive experience without losing the intimacy and authenticity that define WDC.
The Designer Showhouse is one of the event’s anticipated features — what can attendees expect from it this year?
AM: The Designer Showhouse is where our “West-meets-Modern” ethos comes to life. This year, attendees will walk through fully realized interiors: six rooms, porches and connecting spaces, each thoughtfully designed by leading firms often using pieces from our exhibiting artists. It’s a layered, livable design that showcases how craftsmanship and creativity translate into real spaces.
What makes the opening night Preview Party and fashion show experience special, and what’s new for 2026?
AM: The Preview Party sets the tone for the entire weekend; it’s high-energy, celebratory and offers first access to shop directly from the makers. The fashion show adds a dynamic, couture element that reflects the artistry of the West in motion. For 2026, expect an elevated live auction and runway experience with expanded presentation, all within a setting designed to feel both intimate and electric.
With nearly $20,000 in design excellence awards to be presented, how does this reflect WDC’s broader mission of celebrating craftsmanship?
AM: At its core, WDC is about honoring the maker. These awards recognize not just beautiful objects, but the skill, originality and dedication behind them. It’s a meaningful way to elevate artists and reinforce what sets this event apart – direct connection between creator and collector, without commissions and with craftsmanship front and center.
For someone making their first trip to Bozeman, what should they know to make the most of their time at the show?
AM: Come ready to engage. This is not a passive experience; you can meet the artists, hear their stories and take home one-of-a-kind work at all price points directly. Plan time to visit the Designer Show House and attend panels featuring industry experts in architecture, interior design, fashion and Native American cultures. Don’t miss the opening-night Preview Party (VIP reserved seats sell out) and give yourself space to explore. Bozeman in August is exceptional, and the Western Design Conference, August 6–9, is a must-see moment within it.
