Over-the-top, $13 Million Montana Log Cabin For Sale
Former Jet America and Hawaiian Airlines President Tom Talbot and his wife Karen were determined to build the log cabin of their dreams in the most idyllic of mountain backdrops. After an exhaustive search through the American West, they came upon Bitterroot Valley, Montana.
“What led us to come here was the absolute beauty of the valley and a much simpler lifestyle,” Karen says.
The entrepreneurial couple spent two years planning and another three years building this spectacular property, which sits on 160 acres of remote Montana wilderness—a plot of land originally purchased at $3 million. They started with a 3,000-square-foot design, but the blueprint grew to 8,000 square feet within the walls and 11,000 square feet when you include outdoor areas and decks.
The home was featured on the Discovery Channel’s Epic Log Homes, and the National Association of Home Builders gave it the Best Log Home Design award for homes over 4,000 square feet.

The couple wanted to spare healthy trees, so the cabin's logs came from burned-out forests. They also insisted that the logs be squared off by hand—round on the outside, squared off on the inside—since round logs gather more dust and make it difficult to hang decor or hardware.
The nearest street was a mile away, so the couple built their own private road.
In the massive great room, the ceilings are 27 feet high. The solid wood floors are made from 200-year-old reclaimed wood from east-coast barns and railroad trestles.
The 630-square-foot eat-in kitchen includes a butler pantry, plenty of counter space, and leads into the great room.
Down the hallway is the secluded master suite, which includes a luxurious bath tub and a giant shower, which was built to feel like one is showering outdoors.
Upstairs are several more bedrooms, including a bunk room for grandchildren and a loft for guests.
