Contributor Spotlight: David O. Marlow

We sat down with the photographer of the 2017 Home of the Year

MOUNTAIN LIVING: Where have we seen your work?

DAVID MARLOW: I’ve been a photographer for over 40 years and was a staff photographer at Architectural Digest for 30 of those years. I’ve been published all over the world—South Africa, Ukraine, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand and of course in the U.S. and Canada.

What was the first camera you ever owned, and what kinds of photos did you snap with it?

A Nikkormat, a very small Nikon with a wide lens. I photographed my college girlfriend, a lot of landscapes and my friends skiing—which introduced me to sports action photography, one of my first ventures in the field.

In addition to architectural photography, you’ve shot celebrity portraits. Who is your favorite photo subject to date?

I’ve shot [actors] Robert Wagner and Jill St. John for a long time. They are the best—gracious, available and classy. I also loved shooting Teri Garr and Anjelica Huston. Both are extremely classy ladies; it was so much fun to be in their company.

You shot our 2017 Home of the Year in Aspen. What was that like?

The home is incredible—I don’t think I would ever leave it. We shot it twice, once in the summer and once in the winter. On the winter shoot, Cunniffe’s marketing genius Rebecca Richardson led me on a trek through waist-deep snow to find the perfect exterior angle. We weren’t close to dying out there, but maneuvering and getting back to the house was a task.
