A Dreamy Home on Lake Pend Oreille
With views of the lake, the Monarch and Selkirk Mountains, and Schweitzer ski resort, this alpine retreat is a sight to see.
When these homeowners sat down with their team to design their dream mountain abode, their main request was: “We want to see views—and we want to see them all.”
The result is this home at The Idaho Club, a private golf community in Sandpoint, Idaho. With views of the lake, the Monarch and Selkirk Mountains, and Schweitzer ski resort, this alpine retreat is a sight to see in more ways than one!
Every detail of the design is devoted to celebrating what mountain living means, from framed views of the home’s surrounding landscape to its materials. As you approach the home on the road, rounding a bend around a knoll, the view suddenly opens to Lake Pend Oreille—one of the largest lakes in the Northwest—the surrounding mountains, and a front portico with four-post Douglas fir columns on Montana stone bases. Also adorning the home’s exterior are Western red cedar, copper flashing, and broad overhangs to protect against the summer sun.
On the interior, timber trusses support the roof and purlins. The flooring is 3/4” tongue-and-groove birch and 24×24 slate tile. A playful design abounds within the three-story home, with a circular turret serving as its anchor and an abundance of decks to enjoy the warmer months, some of which are covered for colder seasons. A large 2,000-square-foot patio pays homage to the owners’ love for entertaining.
Stepping-stones lead from the large patio up to a private outdoor space. There’s also a putting green incorporated into the design, so the homeowners can practice before heading over to the nearby Jack Nicklaus 18-hole golf course.
The home boasts four bedrooms, a home theater, game room, bar, wine cellar—and every bookworm’s home-design fantasy: a reading room with a secret bookcase entry.
The master bedroom is set at a different angle than the rest of the home; it is positioned to look directly at the ski resort so that the owners can check out the weather conditions on the mountain first thing in the morning on ski days—the perfect way to maximize their love for the mountains.
