Fast & Fun in Steamboat Springs

From roller coasters to Mustangs, 3 mountain activities to try in the Yampa Valley

Steamboat Springs is a place we’ve been visiting for more than a decade but we hadn’t explored the town in several years. Our most recent visit revealed a few new activities that we hadn’t tried before. If you like to go fast and have fun, there are several Steamboat Springs outings that should be on your radar.

Fast & Fun Mustangs

We were in town for the 31st Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup, one of the largest Mustang events in the western United States and the biggest one in Colorado. More than 450 cars make the trek to Steamboat Springs each Father’s Day weekend and the streets are filled with the shiny muscle cars.

Our home away from home for the trip was a condo at Trailhead Lodge. It is conveniently located steps away from the large parking lot dedicated to the event’s AutoCross activities. This proximity meant that we walked over during AutoCross and discovered that the public, once a waiver is signed, can ride along with amenable drivers, and I found one.

Mark Peterson of Longmont took me on his second time trial around the track in his white 1966 Mustang Fastback. According to several Mustang owners we spoke with, it was the hardest track they’d seen at the event. Staying serious for Peterson, I didn’t scream during my experience, although I did nervous giggle around the turns. If you go next year, sign the waiver and get a ride; it’s exhilarating and comes with bragging rights.

Fast Mountain Fun

If you like to go fast, the Outlaw Roller Coaster at Steamboat Resort will leave you breathless. Our condo was just a few minutes away from the ski resort and there are lots of things to do at the base during the summer. You can play a round of miniature golf, take a scenic chair ride, splash in the river, try a climbing wall and more.

The Outlaw Mountain Coaster is one of the newest attractions. Two people can go on the ride together which makes it fantastic for families with little ones. Be sure to pack light because nothing, not even ball caps, are allowed on the coaster. If you don’t have a mom to hold all your stuff while you ride, plan accordingly.

Pedal Less, Bike More

Electric bikes are fun! Photo by Ryan Schlaefer.

Electric bikes are all the rage and now I know why. We jumped on electric bikes from Pedego, a company that rents and sells electric assisted bikes in downtown Steamboat Springs. First of all, if you want to bike around town, the Yampa River Core Trail is fairly flat, but Steamboat as a whole is hilly. Biking to Fish Creek Falls, for example, is uphill, and having an electric assist bike makes it doable for nearly everyone, not just the professionals.

I had never experienced an electric bike before and it will be hard to go back to 100% pedal power after this. Honestly, if you haven’t been on one of these bikes, it makes getting around a breeze. In addition to pedal assist, Pedego bicycles are equipped with thruster power, makes crossing intersection or catching up with your bike partner super easy.

We road the Yampa River Core Trail from downtown toward Storm Peak Brewery on the west side of town. On an e-bike, even a few ups and downs didn’t slow our roll. We made it to the brewery and had a pint and made it back just in time to beat the weather that blew in that day.
