Historic old Town Park City is a destination recalling the time and style of the silver mining boom that drew prospectors during the 1860s. Today, flanked by the Park City Mountain Resort on one side, and Deer Valley Ski Resort on the other, Old Town features over 100 independent boutiques, 50 unique restaurants, and a lively art community. With easy public transportation, and close walking and biking proximity, Old Town draws visitors from far and wide.

The residences in the Old Town neighborhoods are carefully crafted to deliver the mining aesthetic the town was founded upon, blending with the many remaining original structures. JoAnn Howa, owner and principal of Natural Instincts Interior Design, established her business in 1990 and is dedicated to preserving the style of Old Town. “I came to Park City 30 years ago because I love to ski and found this spot the perfect place to work and call home,” she says. Her team, led by experienced women, is driven by fearlessness, creativity, and humility.

“The fun design challenges included the opportunity to give this exceptional 2,900 square-foot, four-bedroom, three-bathroom home in the Lilac Hill district of Old Town a distinct feel and flavor in keeping with the tradition of the area,” Howa notes. “Maintaining the character within a smaller footprint meant using all the space to the very best advantage making the home comfortable with a spacious feel.”

The home’s exterior features metal siding and roofing, Trex decking, and timber lintel above the garage doors, keeping it durable and weather-resistant to accommodate the temperature and moisture changes of the seasons. The interior design was based upon Mountain Modern textural elements, light colors, clean lines, and pops of taupe, orange, silver and black. The use of pale wood and trim allows the natural light to create an airy, open impression.

High-end appliances in the kitchen include a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a Wolf 36-inch dual fuel range, and an Asco dishwasher. A Maytag front load washer and dryer are found in the separate laundry room. The Zen-like bathrooms all shine a spotlight on the use of large format porcelain tile and stone countertops. Bedrooms are well-appointed and invite occupants to curl up and relax with beautiful views of the home’s surroundings.

As Howa says, “The project was near and dear to my heart. We were pleased and proud to have hit the mark with timeless design that will remain beautiful for years to come.”
