Cooler temperatures and the first frost ushers in an innate urge to “feather our nests” by making our mountain retreats cool-weather friendly. Textural accents and a seasonal color palette instantly warm up your refuge signifying the change of seasons.

Make Your Home an Inviting Escape

Candles warm and brighten any room. A single candle in a reading nook is as cozy as a candle grouping of differing heights, shapes, and sizes. On a side table in the entryway, on the mantel, or as accents on a dining table, candles are a simple way to convey the warmth and comfort of the season. Choose scented candles for spaces where food won’t be served to infuse your home with a welcoming fragrance. In the kitchen and dining area, unscented candles provide a welcoming ambiance without distracting from the scent of a tantalizing meal. Remember to trim candle wicks before each burn to reduce smoke.

Redefine Your Color Palette

Transition from a summer weather vibe to one that represents contentment by switching your color palette to incorporate warm neutrals and bright pops of seasonal color. “Inviting coziness includes adding chunky textural accents,” Kyndra Georgeson, owner of Kyndred explains. “Pillows and knit throw blankets in warm neutrals and trending tones like honey, mustard, navy, and evergreen establish a dynamic of contemporary luxury,” she says. Heavier fabric choices including velvet, corduroy, and woven textiles build depth and interest that is inviting in crisp weather. Add some thick area rugs and create nooks that call for relaxation by tossing a pile of pillows and a throw in the corners of couches, loveseats, and chairs.

Set a Welcoming Table

Pivot from a “less is more” table setting to one rich with interest and color. Combine a table runner, centerpieces of varying heights, linen napkins, and vibrant fruit or fragrant flowers and greenery. “Bring the feel of the outdoors in with decorative elements of natural stone, wood, and raw metals to warm up the look,” says Georgeson.

Layer Your Linens

Layer substantial bedding to make the bed your room’s centerpiece. Combine buttery soft high thread count cotton or flannel sheets with a warm duvet and pillows that are fluffy and full. Mix different colors, patterns, and textures for depth. Add a fur or chunky knit throw for cozy interest. Above all, make the bed a welcoming place for a quick nap or a long night’s sleep.

A few carefully curated changes can make your mountain getaway comfortable, functional, and coveted all fall and winter.
