A Steamboat Springs home marries the old with the new
It all started with a photograph of an Italian villa.
When the owners of this Steamboat Springs retreat first expressed interest in building a second residence, they referenced pictures of homes along the Italian countryside as inspiration. With this aesthetic in tow, a mountain home was born—one that harkens to the Italian days of old while incorporating current and contemporary features.
The home’s architecture mimics that of the mountains beyond; it’s full of movement, arcs, and angles.
A mix of dry stack stone and cedar siding adorn the exterior, and a metal panel strip gives a bit of contemporary flair and vertical emphasis to the tower.
Inside, a stone fireplace, timber arched trusses, arched vaulted ceilings, and visually thick walls echo traditional forms of construction, while features like the clean-lined kitchen and the minimalist steel-and-glass staircase balance the old with the new.
An oversize curved window faces east, framing the ski mountain and blurring the lines between the interior and surrounding landscape. The large covered patio is the perfect spot for indulging in a drink by the outdoor fireplace, and is prime real estate for the homeowner’s monthly charity events.
Arguably the most prominent feature of this sprawling abode is its tower, which boasts a deck, walkway, and wet bar for fully absorbing its stunning 360-degree views.
