This sprawling timber frame home marries transitional design with out-of-this-world vantage points

​Nestled into the dramatic mountain landscape of the Alpine Mountain Ranch & Club—a 1,200-acre mountainside development in Steamboat Springs, Colorado—this sprawling mountain home was built for a family with an active lifestyle and an appreciation for the natural environment.

Special attention was paid in situating the 10,800-square-foot home on the site to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, taking maximum advantage of surrounding views. The home has sweeping 360-degree outlooks of the valley below and sightlines to the Steamboat Springs Ski Resort.

The home’s transitional architectural style uses stone and pitched roofs with exposed rafter tails, blended with the clean lines and detailing of a more contemporary design approach. With backgrounds in civil engineering and construction, the owners wanted a true timber frame home with mortise and tenon joinery.

In keeping with the spirit of the mountain community, rough-sawn timber siding and board-and-batten cedar were used for the home’s exterior, along with the corten steel roofing accents designed to weather naturally. Sustainable strategies were also a high priority in the home. The exterior walls of the house are highly insulated to an R38 rating and only bedrooms have air conditioning, with most of the home cooled by natural ventilation and heated with an in-floor radiant system.

The living room fireplace offers a cozy space to take in views across the ranch and valley floor and to the Flat Top Mountains, Sleeping Giant and Sand Mountain.

This family home is also designed for entertaining, both inside and out. Covered porches convey openness between the spaces. The interior features an open plan enabled by the timber framing and high parallel-chord trusses overheard. A large outdoor dining room extends from the kitchen with a wood-burning fireplace and views of the surrounding mountains. Off of the basement, a large gathering space includes a stone fire pit and a spa for enjoyment in any season.

An exterior observation platform and telescope offer views of the Flat Top Mountain, Steamboat Ski Area and abundant wildlife in the area.

Primary living spaces make up the main floor and include the master bedroom, kitchen, dining and formal entry, with double-height spaces to the library and music rooms above. Two family bedrooms, two guest rooms, a home office and a caretaker unit are located up one floor.

Off of the basement, a large gathering space includes a stone fire pit and a spa for enjoyment in any season.

The lower level of the home is all about fun. Family and guests can entertain themselves in a number of ways—there is a game room, custom bar, 1,000-bottle wine cellar, exercise room, and full theater. Additional features include a dog wash, Integrated Home Automation System, and an auto-lift in the garage.
