Design of the Day: An Industrial-Rustic Room
We first published this St. Helena, California, home several years ago, but its sophisticated industrial-rustic style makes it one of our all-time favorites.

Stone discovered in an old Pony Express outpost in Indian Gap, Texas, provided the inspiration for the dwellingâs entire materials palette. The flooringâfound in a 1950s sewing factoryâwas left unsanded, and the dramatic hand-hewn beams come from the Ohio River Valley and date back to the mid-1800s. Warehouse-style shelving in the great room (above) is oversized to match the scale of the other materials, and a custom light fixture and dramatic vent hood, both designed by architect Ira Martin, complete the space.
