A Powder Mountain Modern Stunner in the Wasatch Mountains
Another thoughtful collaboration between Sparano + Mooney Architecture and Marvin results in a masterpiece of modern mountain living.
Perched high in the Wasatch Mountains, this modern ski home was designed to embrace multigenerational living while maintaining a strong, year-round connection to its alpine setting. Built into a sloping site, the home steps down the mountain, naturally separating quiet, private areas from shared gathering spaces.
In addition to the spacious, open main living area, the home includes a secluded primary suite, two guest rooms and bunk room, an onsen/spa space, ski room and a media room with a tucked-away scullery and bar.
On the exterior, durable steel cladding blends with hem fir soffits that carry inside as wood ceilings, reinforcing continuity between exterior and interior. Inside, a restrained palette of rift white oak cabinetry, polished concrete floors and black granite accent the clean, modern architecture while grounding the home in its mountain context.
From the outset, the design intent was to minimize disturbance to the site while making nature an integral part of daily life.
Windows play a starring role in achieving this balance. The high-performance glazing is strategically placed for performance, comfort and connection to the landscape. Operable windows are positioned to capture natural mountain breezes, promoting cross-ventilation and reducing reliance on mechanical heating and cooling. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the main living areas frame views and bring in natural light, maintaining a tight, energy-efficient building envelope.
“The windows for the project required consistency in aesthetics and included fixed windows, mullion-less corners, large operable awnings, swing doors, pivot doors and multi-slide doors from the Marvin Ultimate collection,” says Principal Architect Seth Striefel. “Marvin provided the full range of configurations, with handcrafted interior finishes that align flawlessly with the home’s ceilings and millwork. Narrow frame profiles maximize views to the amazing surrounding mountain landscape.”
Designed to withstand heavy snow and high winds, the home balances leading-edge technologies with thoughtful site planning. On the exterior, native landscaping and careful water management ensure the home feels both serene and durable, creating an elegant, efficient, modern retreat shaped by its mountain environment.
