The architecture of shade proved siren’s call for Miami high-performance yacht outfitter Dougan Clarke, who founded TUUCI (The Ultimate Umbrella Company, Inc.) in 1998, innovating the lowly bumbershoot into the technologically advanced sun-busting parasols that have become de rigueur poolside at five-star escapes.
Along the way, Clarke’s open-air lounging aesthetic expanded to encompass seaworthy seating that’s equally adept at foiling mountain homeowners’ weather worries. Proprietary Aluma-Forge construction fuses stainless steel, polymer and aluminum for longevity and strength, and for the recent Sail collection, Clarke created a Spinnaker Weave—tough textiles twisted to mimic a sail’s billowing curves—for a deft detail that we think is made in the shade.
