Creative solutions for transforming often overlooked spaces

Sometimes in interior design, the smaller the space the bigger the opportunity to make a bold statement. Transitional spaces and small nooks that at first glance don’t seem to have a defined purpose can present a design conundrum because if ignored, they might stand out as more awkward. Here are a few simple ways to transform those areas into functional and aesthetically beautiful spaces.

Just Add Wallpaper

Wallpaper Powder Bath

For smaller rooms, especially powder bathrooms, interior designers almost always recommend applying wallcovering. This simple trick can infuse your space with personality and make a bold impression guests won’t soon forget.

Likewise, adding wallpaper to a laundry room helps give the area not only intentionality and functional direction, but who knows, may even make folding laundry more exciting!

Reflect Light to Trick the Eye

Artistic lighting paired with a mirror will make any small area look larger. Light reflected off the mirror automatically creates the illusion of a more dramatic focal feature. Another way to capture light without a light fixture is to strategically position mirrors across from windows or other light sources.

Create Multi-Use Spaces

Get creative with dual purpose spaces. A window seat (like the one featured in the main image) is always the perfect reading or conversation corner, so make it cozy and inviting with plush accent pillows.

Additionally, create workable spaces that can be tucked away when not in use. This nook is designed to be a hidden office covered by a barn door when not in use so the overall space flow is minimalistic and clean.

Muphy Bed Closed

A Murphy bed is one of the best uses in a dual-purpose small space. When closed, this room is an office/sitting area with built-in bookshelves along either side. The large scale art not only creates a stunning focal point, but is also an operable handle to convert into a comfortable bed for guests.

Taking an artistic approach to small spaces goes a long way in creating a lasting impact, both functionally and aesthetically.
