With many children and grandchildren, the home’s Australian owners visualized a large residence to accommodate family gatherings and vacations without missing the warm and inviting elements of a smaller space. They also wanted to marry traditional mountain living with clean, contemporary design—all while being able to enjoy the amazing mountain views from every room.
The result? This stunning hilltop home with sweeping views.
Stone, oak, and glass are the three material themes. The first floor’s stone exterior and horizontal banding help ground the home into its mountain setting—as if it’s sitting on a plinth of rock—while the walls of glass lining the upper level’s perimeter capture the almost-250-degree surrounding views.
Throughout the home, white oak trusses and steel details are juxtaposed with horizontal bands of stone to keep the large home from feeling too vertical and oppressive—while incorporating nature-inspired materials and supporting its elegant mountain contemporary interiors.
In the great room, 19-foot-wide windows stand 11 feet tall, with adjacent 16-foot-wide windows—all to capitalize on the home’s expansive view of the Elk Mountain range.
The Aspen retreat boasts not one but two kitchens. The family kitchen offers a large gathering island, clean lines, and a gorgeous cut of marble behind the stove. And should the family want to celebrate on a grander scale, there is a full-on working kitchen behind this one, including a butler’s pantry, for larger meals or a serving crew.
This cooking and dining space connects with an intimate sitting area and hearth—the perfect nook for family meals and gatherings.
There are 2 master suites, 4 additional guest rooms, plus a 2 bedroom caretaker suite.
