A Whimsical Mixed-Media Sculpture

Rachel Denny's lighthearted art

Rachel Denny takes the traditional art of taxidermy to a lighthearted new place, knitting cozy cashmere sweaters for deer and bedazzling horses with coats of glittering sequins. Her mixed-media sculptures are inspired by the yaks, horses, and chickens that live on her small farm in the shadow of Mt. Hood—and by a desire to stitch connections between the natural and man-made worlds.

To give the life-size “Spotted Yak” (shown above) its shaggy coat, Denny painstakingly attached individual lengths of alpaca and yak wool yarn to a hand-knit coverlet. See more at Foster/White Gallery in Seattle and racheldenny.com
