One Wood Slab, Three Ways
One of our favorite things about our 2014 Home of the Year is interior designer Rain Houser's masterful—and playful— attention to details inspired by classic high-country style. "Because we used minimal color, we chose elements with significant textural interest," she explains. Case in point: the rustic wood slab, which Houser used in three very different applications:

The master bedroom's custom-designed headboard is made from a giant black-walnut slab. It's "a nod to George Nakashima," Houser says. The sheepskin-clad Cortina chair by refuge is a soft counterpoint.

Another slab serves as a vanity top in the powder room. To keep the focus on the wood's sculptural quality, Houser topped it with a simple stone vessel sink and chose an understated wall-mounted faucet.

Houser designed the dining table from yet another slab of black walnut and painted the raw edge white for a modern riff on a rustic motif. "I would have painted it pink, if [owner Clay Heighten] didn't hate pink," she laughs. The designer still managed to add cheerful color to the space, courtesy of Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs from Design Within Reach and "Ascension," the large-scale abstract by Montana artist Rocky Hawkins.
