Mountain Getaways (Without the Kids)

Escape with your sweetheart to these adults-only Colorado retreats

Family vacations are great fun, but sometimes a couple needs to get away by themselves. Here are five ways to rekindle the romance in the Rocky Mountains.

A romantic soak

Head on over to Strawberry Park Hot Springs in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for a romantic soak. If you haven’t been in a few years, you might be surprised by the “remodel” here. While it’s changed a bit, Strawberry Park hasn’t lost its wildness, especially after dark when the place becomes adult-only and clothing optional.

For the ultimate experience, camp or book one of their hillside cabins and a couples massage at the spa.

The Springs, in Pagosa Springs, is a family playground with one exception. The Relaxation Terrace is located above the fray and boasts five adult-only soaking pools that include a gorgeous waterfall. The one catch is that you must be a guest of the hotel to utilize this area, and if you are, you will enjoy 24-hour access. Grab a drink at the hotel bar, listen to a little live music in the EcoLuxe Hotel lobby and then head outside to soak your blues away.

A ranch getaway

A dude ranch might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re considering a getaway with your honey, but a child-free ranch experience can be just what the Love Doctor ordered. The Great Grown-up Getaway is available at Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch for one week in August and one week in September. There will be wine and cheese tastings and 17 delicious ranch meals suited for an adult palate. Other grownup activities are planned, such as dancing and trapshooting. Sylvan Dale is located just over an hour north of Denver.

If you believe that nothing goes together quite as well as a top-shelf whiskey and a fly fishing pole, check out The Home Ranch’s Whiskey & Fishing Weekend in late summer. During downtime, guests can learn the art of mixology and attend outdoor cooking demos at the ranch’s new Farm Kitchen. The Home Ranch is located 18 miles north of Steamboat Springs.

Summer camp for adults

Do you miss summer camp? Adults can now enjoy their own camp-like experience at YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park or at Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby. Grab your partner or a group of friends and participate in everything from roller skating and swimming to disc golf. You can even learn a new skill such as fly fishing or archery. Rent a cabin or yurt, or book a lodge room and pretend you’re 10 again.

An adult-friendly festival

You’ve heard about family-friendly festivals, but have you ever heard of an adult-friendly fest? Colorado Mountain Winefest in Palisade is such an event. No one under 21, unless its a baby in a stroller, is allowed to attend, and no pets either. Taking place over four days, Colorado Wine Festival is a highly respected wine event featuring everything from wine tours of the region to culinary seminars.

Adults-only lodging

If you’re in the market for an adults-only hotel, there are a few places that cater to grownups. Crested Butte is located in one of Colorado’s prettiest little corners, and Purple Mountain Bed & Breakfast caters to grownups with six comfortably appointed guest rooms, an onsite spa and an outdoor hot tub. With complimentary craft beer on tap daily, you’ll never want to leave.
