A Contemporary Log Home With Walls of Glass

With low-profile rooflines that blend seamlessly into the land, this Colorado cabin mimics Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie-style architecture.

With square, milled Douglas fir logs, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a breathtaking indoor-outdoor connection, this Rocky Mountain retreat puts a modern and luxurious spin on the traditionally rustic log cabin. Inspired by the flat and broad silhouettes of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie-style architecture, its low-profile rooflines blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.

The 4,309-square-foot home sits on 15 acres in Northern Colorado and was designed and built to enjoy the land while minimizing the disturbance of its natural beauty; the landscaping around the home is minimal to maintain a genuine and continuous connection to the site. The home was also designed and built to maximize its surrounding stunning views, which change seasonally; the side of the home facing the property boasts expansive glass for sightseeing, and each room is staggered to afford extra windows.

Reflective ceiling elements ensure natural light reaches every corner of the interior spaces. The exterior and interior materials—such as the Douglas fir logs and the abundant use of stone throughout the home—were chosen to mix organically with the landscape, further emphasizing the incredible indoor-outdoor vibe. Speaking of the outdoors, the outdoor space was designed as a second living room—the perfect spot for sunset gatherings and dining under the stars.

The common areas, enveloped in glass, flow effortlessly together. With three workstations and two sinks, the kitchen is fit for entertaining. In the master bedroom, the bed sits against a half-wall, positioning it closer to the windows, and the four guest bedrooms reside in a wing that can be closed off from the rest of the house when not in use.
