31 Days of Cozy: Day 31

Location: Aspen, Colorado Cozy Factor: Architect Charles Cunniffe and his project team produced several designs for this 44-acre homesite that’s situated on a hillside with southwest views up Castle Creek Valley toward Hayden Peak. “The clients chose an eclectic mix of forms with the greatest variety of shapes,” says Cunniffe, who tailored the design to the sloping site. “We wanted a contemporary mountain home that looked like a collection of buildings rather than one large house,” homeowner Mark Rosenthal explains. With its cherry-framed glass door and arched clerestory ceiling, the main entry draws the eye through the house toward a southwesterly view up Castle Creek Valley. The entry’s rectilinear form and local sandstone walls provide contrast with the cylindrical shape and oxidized-steel cladding of the form to its right.
