An Urban Rustic Retreat in Ketchum

Hotel Ketchum is minutes from the hustle and bustle of the city with spacious, pet-friendly rooms and an aprés-ski retreat with artisanal cocktails

Walking distance from the galleries, boutiques and restaurants of Ketchum, Idaho, the Hotel Ketchum was designed to be an urban rustic retreat. Upon arrival, the first thing guests notice is the substantial ram’s horn iron door pull on the entry, a thematic detail that runs throughout the hotel. Sheep are integral to the community of Ketchum (as demonstrated by the fact that they get their own annual parade), and Studio 11 Interior Design nods to them throughout the hotel with a mural—“Lucky Ewe” by Molly Snee, which can be seen from the main street—sheep photos above the beds, and clever slogans on the coffee mugs: “We can’t wait to sleep with you.”

Locally sourced Idaho potato sacks, along with views of Bald Mountain welcome guests in the lobby of Hotel Ketchum

In a town surrounded by Sawtooth National Forest and located at the base of Bald Mountain, the design team was inspired by nature, incorporating a mix of natural materials and textures and a color palate indigenous to the area. Honoring Idaho’s main agricultural crop, potato sacks hang in the lobby; in a cozy nook above it resides the “Hemingway library,” boasting a collection of books by authors connected to the community. Custom wingback chairs invite guests to settle in with a good story, including those of Ketchum’s one-time most famous resident, Ernest Hemingway.

Guest rooms come in different sizes and designs; some include special amenities like this charming banquette and fireplace

The rooms and guest suites are spacious, ranging from 340 to 450 square feet in a variety of configurations, some with fireplaces and balconies. All are pet friendly—a portion of pet fees are donated to local animal shelters—and include ample USB charging ports, large bathrooms with walk-in showers, and comfortable Euro Top mattresses. No need to worry about schlepping your gear to your room; you can store it in the convenient “gear garage” off the lobby, with room for skis, boards and bikes.

Hotel amenities include a delicious breakfast buffet served in the Hangout

Additional hotel amenities include a fitness room, year-round outdoor heated pool and hot tub. The Hangout—a communal space, lounge and après-ski retreat—features artisanal cocktails including local favorites Bah-Ram-Ewe, a mixture of Aviation gin, cucumber shrub and lime juice; and the Gingerita with Espolon tequila, ginger liquor, lime and grapefruit bitters.

“We collaborated with the management team during the entire design process,” says interior designer Hellen Hale of Studio 11. “And that allowed us the freedom to create this funky, curated vibe that makes Hotel Ketchum so special.”
