Stunning Outdoor Views Paired with Art Add a Luxurious Pop to a Ski-In, Ski-Out Remodel

Homeowner Red Whitson took his time remodeling a Snowmass ski-in, ski-out condo because he had some design ideas he wanted to try out. “I just wanted to have fun with the process,” he says. Whitson collaborated with interior designers Preethi Rajaratnam and Amanda Furlong of Cathers Home in Basalt, Colorado. The trio had worked together twice before, and the completed project proves the third time is the charm.

Whitson, a nature lover and photographer, gave the design duo little direction except that he wanted to include a personal piece of art: a photograph he took of the Maroon Bells. “It’s a unique photo because it captures the fall colors with the snow, which is hard to get,” Whitson says, “and because I hiked there, the photo is taken in a different spot (than the iconic framing).”

Rajaratnam and Furlong used Whitson’s photograph as inspiration for the design of the living area. “We incorporated his personal artwork into the interior by using the yellow colors of the aspen trees in the accent pillows, the marble-top golden coffee table, and the golden hues in the shelves and petrified wood side table,” Furlong explains.

During the remodel, Whitson fell in love and married Sarah—and he was hoping she would love the space as much as he did. “The condo beautifully combines elegance, comfort and a true sense of home,” Sarah says. She particularly enjoys the living area and its cozy setting. “It invites relaxation in front of the fireplace—perfect for snowy evenings.”

The adjacent kitchen and dining areas celebrate the beauty of nature, with the views being the big draw for the gathering space. The dining area carries on the natural motif, with a Phillip Jeffries paper. “It looks like little leaves and gives me the feeling of being outdoors in the woods,” Whitson says. The bedroom honors the landscape as well, including a headboard made of sliced wood rounds. “It’s a continuation of bringing the outside in,” Rajaratnam explains.

“We wanted it to be organic but cozy, so we added a lot of furry textures as well.” For this remodel, Whitson wanted to expand on Mountain Modern design, and include high-quality, durable pieces with luxurious elements, rich textures—and wallpapers that would “pop in pictures.” However, his favorite part of the completed project has nothing to do with design. “I love the beautiful views,” he says. “I could stare out the windows all day and get nothing done.”
