The area that includes Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks is home to one of the most famous grizzly bear populations in the world. Usually quite shy, the species is often hard to spot. Jackson Hole Grizzly 399 spent her life roaming closer to the highway, navigating the intersections of wilderness and humans. A popular and impressive site, she was often seen herding her cubs. She gave birth to 17 babies during her lifetime and was one of the most photographed bears in the world.

At the age of 28, Grizzly 399 was hit by a car and killed in Snake River Canyon just south of Jackson, Wyoming. One of her cubs was with her at the time of her death. She was identified by an ear tag and microchip and her ashes were scattered in Grand Tetons National Park. Nicknamed the Queen of the Tetons, Grizzly 399 remains legendary. She has been the subject of books, delighting people of all ages and teaching them about the balance of nature and coexistence.
