The ML List: Top Mountain Landscape Designers 2017
In mountain communities, it takes a specialist schooled in the nuances of mountain terroir to create landscapes that last, blending in harmony with the countryside.
The editorial team at Mountain Living is pleased to feature our first Top Mountain Landscape Designers list. With recommendations from architects, designers and readers, we’ve compiled a directory of firms creating scenery with Mother Nature’s stamp of approval—and you’ll see the results in the following pages, listed by state and town. Some firms have more than one location, but we included the specific locale submitted with the nomination. And you’ll see that firms who have been in the pages of ML receive a special designation, listing their most recent project as of May/June 2017. The list is illustrated with some of our favorite images.

A successful garden design emerges from an understanding of a client’s dreams, the opportunities presented by the site, and the relationship between a home and the surrounding landscape. In a mountain setting, the goal is to capture distant views and embrace the expansive landscape, while providing intimate spaces of human scale. —Kurt Culbertson

This was an exciting project; collaborating with owners, architect, pond company and landscape installer. Designing water features provided opportunities for creating a sense of place, and my favorite was choosing native plants for the challenging high elevation plant design. — Beth MacFawn See more at: Building a Legacy

Site context is important for every project we do and in the case of the “Ranch Redux” project, even more so. Located adjacent to some of the most important spawning habitat for the Snake River cutthroat trout our design required a careful blending of client needs with the sensitive natural resource values that were present. A careful use of water and use of a native plant palette seamlessly blends the home into the native landscape, and both the client and environment came out as winners. This is what we enjoy the most and drives our designs on each project we do. — Jim Verdone See more at: A Ranch Redux in Jackson Hole
