TKP Architects
To connect this mountain contemporary home with its lower level swimming pool, TKP Architects added a new family room and exercise room that step down the hillside. This addition follows the slope of the mountain and adds visual interest at the back of the house. A detached garage with a cozy guest suite above was constructed to accommodate six classic cars and automobile memorabilia.
The original house’s materials palette—textured cream stucco and irregular fieldstone— was also used on the additions to create a cohesive compound. The original home was also completely renovated with the goal of creating a fun, casual home for large family gatherings.
Renovations to the home’s lower level include a new theater, wet bar and wine room, which all open to a new family room and billiards room a few steps below. A gas fireplace with recessed television above was designed for the family room. The custom-designed curved bar with illuminated glass block and a raised glass bar top became the center for entertaining.
Floor-to-ceiling frameless glass separates a wine-tasting table from wine stored in a custom wine rack fabricated of punched stainless-steel plates and lit from behind. A grid of backlit red art glass on the back wall of the bar area complements the custom wine rack.
The billiards area overlooks an exercise room—situated one level below the family room—featuring large skylights and a beamed ceiling. Adjacent to the exercise room are a pool bath/changing room, steam shower, sauna and massage room, all easily accessed from the swimming pool.
This project was recently named “Best Addition” at the 2011 CARE (Colorado Awards for Remodeling Excellence) Awards.
