It’s true, there really is no place like home for the holidays.

But sometimes, with all the hustle and hassle that come with this time of year, nothing sounds better than a little time just for you—away from home. This year’s guide is filled with high-country escapes of all kinds. If you’re looking for thrills, you can dog-sled along secluded backcountry trails or ride a helicopter up to pristine mountain peaks and ski your way down. If retail therapy is what you crave, you’ll find towns with some of the best shopping this side of the Mississippi. And if a little rest and relaxation are all you really need, the high country is filled with luxurious resorts and decadent spas, each made more special by its strong sense of place. And remember, just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you can’t get into the holiday spirit. The mountain towns in our print issue on page 36 host winter celebrations you just won’t find anywhere else.
