Water's Edge

With salvaged architectural elements, handcrafted finishes and storied antiques at every turn, this family home on the Madison River is steeped in heritage and grounded in its wild Montana setting.

TAKE IT OUTSIDE
Careful planning for a variety of conditions and activities provides the family with myriad spaces to relax, entertain—and simply enjoy being outdoors.

In The Shadows A patio to the west of the house provides a cool, shady space to beat the heat when summer temperatures rise.

Glowing Embers  A firepit by the river's edge enables the couple to linger outdoors even on cool nights. “Sitting by the river in the evening is one of our favorite things,” Lathie says.

Flower Power  Fourteen flower boxes planted with annuals add color around the property; the height deters wildlife from snacking on the plantings.

Towering Trees  It was important to the Pooles that the construction did not disturb the property's old trees; now they are regularly watered and pruned. “We work very hard to maintain and take care of the trees,” says Lathie.

Sounds of Silence  “We love being out in the middle of nowhere, so close to nature,” says Lathie. “When we sit quietly we are often visited by elk, deer and moose, and we feel very privileged.”
