Southwest Looms

An Expert Q&A with Doug Lay, Cynthia McLaren and Nelda Lay from Southwest Looms.

September/October 2010

YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS… For many folks, a rug is an afterthought. But we believe that a rug sets the tone for your entire living space and should be given primary consideration. Select a rug that matches your personal aesthetic and sense of space. The texture, color and style of the rug will help guide your choices of fabrics, wall colors, window treatments and accessories, for an end result that’s an integrated, warm and inviting whole.

YOUR STYLE IS INFLUENCED BY… Our Pendleton® rug collection is influenced by the Indian trade blankets produced by Pendleton Woolen Mills and trade blanket archive sources. Our Dreamcatcher rug collection is inspired by classic examples of Navajo rug design.

THE MOST INSPIRING THING YOU'VE SEEN LATELY IS… The truly revolutionary design and weaving techniques used in India that make it possible to accurately and beautifully reproduce virtually any rendering in exquisite detail.

YOU'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT… Good weaving and color! A carpet’s quality depends on many factors, including quality of wool, type of spin on the yarn, knot density (the number of knots per square inch) or weft density (for flat-weave carpets), warp and weft materials, color and finishing. One aspect we pay particular attention to is color. First we select the colors we’ll use, then we pick the spin of the wool, which determines whether the color is expressed evenly or unevenly. Finally we determine the placement of colors in relation to one another and whether colors are shown separately or blended together. The choices we make at every step determine the quality and beauty of the final product.

SHARE WITH US ONE OF YOUR GO-TO DESIGN RESOURCES.

One of our favorite resources on the history of Navajo weaving is the magnificent publication Chasing Rainbows by Barry Friedman.

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT YOU?

We’ll be introducing several new Pendleton designs in 2011, along with runners that are compatible with many of our existing designs. We also have a special new group of Dreamcatcher designs in the works.
