Telluride and other Colorado mountain towns are becoming leaders in energy-efficient building. “The green aspect enters into most designs now,” says architect Jack Snow, of RKD Architects. He and home builder/owner Jon Dahl, of Double Diamond Builders, achieved a 5 ENERGY STAR® rating on this home with the following strategies:

A southern orientation makes the most of passive solar energy
High clerestory windows bring in more light
Low-E windows lower heat loss in winter, while an SPF coating protects floors and furnishings from fading
Overhangs prevent overheating in summer but allow winter sunlight to enter
Stepped-up insulation goes beyond recommended ratings
Radiant in-floor heat
High-efficiency-rated boiler
Humidification system
Energy-saving appliances
Low-energy LED lighting on dimmers
Water-saving dual-flush toilets
Recycled materials: Manufactured recycled materials such as plywood, joists, studs and plates were used for the structure. Concrete countertops are made with 50 percent recycled materials.
Renewable resources: Bamboo (for flooring and cabinets) is abundant and fast-growing.

This house was so well built that a Blower Door test revealed it was too airtight — “a good problem to have,” says homeowner/builder Jon Dahl. An air-exchange system was added to bring in fresh air.
