Brewster McLeod Architects

An Expert Q&A with Brewster McLeod Architects

November/December 2011

CLIENTS COME TO BREWSTER McLEOD ARCHITECTS FOR… Individual and personalized attention.

I have established my business as a boutique architecture firm to allow the architect and client to have a devoted one-on-one relationship that ensures the client’s dreams become a living reality. An open communication channel has proved time and again that the best design results from collaboration between the architect and client. The goal of each design is to ensure a client’s desires are expressed with style and thoughtfulness.

YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS… To listen to the client.

My design philosophy changes depending on what style of architecture I am designing and my client’s overall needs. I create anything from a mountain contemporary home to a rustic cabin along the river, to a Cabana perched poolside at 8,000 feet above sea level; it just depends on my client’s desires. Designing is about reading between the lines and defining what someone is really saying, asking, what is the vision they want the house to communicate?

YOUR STYLE IS INFLUENCED BY… The great lodges of the National Parks.

Growing up in a National Park as a fourth-generation Montanan and Glacier National Park native truly influenced my love for inspiring buildings set perfectly in nature. I find myself deeply connected to iconic architecture in harmony with its natural surroundings. This has set the precedent for my sensitivity toward construction. I always aspired to be an architect for the National Park Service, building natural projects and renovating historic lodges. I feel this passion is reflected in my design of luxury homes.

THE MOST INSPIRING THING YOU'VE SEEN LATELY IS… Llao Llao Hotel and Resort in Bariloche, Argentina.

I just returned from a trip to Argentina. After spending a few days in Buenos Aires, we headed south to Patagonia and the town of Bariloche, nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains along the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake . The Llao Llao lodge is situated perfectly among majestic mountains and lakes, on a little knoll with 360-degree views capturing the mountains, lake and golf course.  It was simply stunning; that is how I aspire to design my homes.

EVERY HOME MUST HAVE… A connection to its owners.

According to Brewster McLeod, each home should tell a story about the owners. Some clients design homes around artwork, others want their residence to reflect a love of the outdoors with ski-in/ski-out accessibility, while others still want to create a legacy property for multiple generations to gather for many years to come. Regardless of what the house represents, the home must highlight the clients. That is what makes each design unique.

SHARE WITH US ONE OF YOUR GO-TO DESIGN RESOURCES.

The Las Vegas Market! It’s a yearly ritual for me regardless of my schedule. There is more inspiration, new products and designs there than any other place imaginable. The styles cover the gamut and the sources are endless. The educational sessions and exhibitors are fantastic too, and I always incorporate some part of the Las Vegas Market into new designs for my clients.
