There’s something magical about listening to stringed instruments while surrounded by nature. For me, it’s a truly ethereal experience. To some, classical music may be old-fashioned, but it’s always in fashion. In fact, every summer mountain towns embrace this genre of music at outdoor concert venues across the west.
Here’s where you can listen to classical music in the great outdoors in the mountain west.
GRAND TETON MUSIC FESTIVAL
Beginning in late June—five nights a week for seven weeks—visitors to Jackson, Wyoming, will be treated to the beautiful sound of classical music in the great outdoors during the Grand Teton Music Festival. At the Walk Music Festival Hall, a slopeside concert venue in the heart of Teton Village, prestigious performers will entertain audiences throughout the summer months.
This summer’s season features superstar violinists Joshua Bell and Nicola Benedetti; pianist Jonathan Biss—the foremost interpreter of Beethoven’s piano sonatas; internationally acclaimed percussionist Colin Currie; and cellist Johannes Moser.
Donald Runnicles has been the Music Director of the Grand Teton Music Festival since 2006, and his 10th anniversary with the festival has been dedicated to his Ten Years in the Tetons.

STRINGS MUSIC FESTIVAL
Steamboat Springs, CO
The Strings Music Festival features more than just classical music; in fact, Strings presents more than 65 performances of classical music, jazz, rock, country, bluegrass, world rhythms, and many other genres year-round. I always check Strings’ calendar when I’m planning a trip to Steamboat Springs because this organization brings some amazing musicians to town, and has been doing so for 28 years.
Strings has both an inside and outside venue, plus their free Music on the Green series that takes place eight times this summer at the Yampa River Botanic Park. The first concert is on Thursday, June 23, 2016 and features the Coventry Quartet.
