Django Festival All-Stars
July 20, 2018
Traveling the world with their unique, high-energy performances, the Django Festival All-Stars pay tribute to the style of Django Reinhardt (1910-1953), one of the greatest guitar players of all time and the first European jazz musician to make major contributions to the development of the guitar genre. His driving, swinging style became known as “hot jazz” and continues to grow in popularity globally. The Django All-Stars honor the best energetic traditions of this French Gypsy Jazz, but add their own creative interpretations, arrangements, and original compositions, all with the stunning virtuosity typical of these highly regarded players.
American Dance Music from the Ragtime Era to the Roaring 20s
July 28, 2018
Library of Congress Musicologist Loras John Schissel returns to Strings, conducting a program that celebrates American dance music from the Ragtime Era to the Roaring 20s. Ragtime is a distinctive American style of music that grew in popularity from the 1890s, and its unique syncopation influenced well-known dance steps today, like the Charleston. Popular until it was naturally supplanted by America’s other favorite genre, jazz, in the century’s second decade, this special program explores a variety of styles and the irresistible energy generated in speakeasies and dance halls across America. Led by Vijay Gupta of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Festival Orchestra features principal players from The Cleveland Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
